When a particle decays, its mass before the decay can be calculated from the masses of its decay products. Researchers plot the masses of these decay products. If they originated from the particle being sought, they form a signal peak around the mass of the original particle. However, if they did not come from the original particle, they form a smooth distribution referred to as the combinatorial background.
