In particle physics, some phenomena can be best described by two separate quantum mechanical states with respect to some underlying symmetry. If the observed state is rotated within this underlying symmetry, it is called a "mixed state". There is thus a probability to observe one or the other underlying quantum mechanical state. This probability is determined by the rotation angle within this coordinate system, called the "mixing angle".
