Elwyn Baynham earned his BSc from the University of Wales in 1967 and was awarded a PhD in neutron scattering from the University of Aston in Birmingham in 1972. From 1970 to 2008, he worked on Superconducting Magnet Technology at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory developing accelerator and detector magnets. From 1997 to 2008, he was the project leader for the design and manufacture of the ATLAS End Cap Toroids. After retirement from RAL he worked as a magnet consultant for ITER.
