Indigenous Cosmology Meets Particle Physics is an interdisciplinary collaboration and youth workshop that investigates native science, western science and the arts as parallel ‘ways of knowing’ and understanding our place in the universe.

The workshop is a collaboration with Quarknet, STEMarts Lab, The PASEO, Taos Pueblo Day School and TISA, sponsored by the LANL Foundation.

Western scientific discoveries are revealing a universe that is more aligned with indigenous worldviews than ever before. A new understanding of the interdependant
laws of nature and our connection to the stars, offers an unprecedented opportunity for intercultural exchange with indigenous communities. In this three day workshop we will explore the cloud chamber, Rolling with Rutherford and the Particles card game. Students will learn about Feynman diagrams and petroglyphs and then create their own hybrid symbols painted on to hide and then projected on to the walls for the final parent performance.

Through this webcast, our students will be provided with an introduction to fundamental and particle physics. We will focus on the structure of the atom and the pieces that hold the atom together while emphasizing the larger picture of particle physics.

Scientists from the LIGO experiment, known for their spring discovery of Gravitational Waves, will join us at ATLAS from their observatory in Hanford, Washington. The Peachtree students will learn of other new methods to improve our understanding of the universe.

It features students from Early Fall Start LHC Physics classes for incoming freshman in 2016 at the University of Washington in Seattle. Students can interact with scientists at CERN by asking questions about physics, experiments, and the state-of-the-art technology of radiation detection at the energy frontier. This experience will stimulate their curiosity about science by exposing them to some of the inside stories of the largest and the most complicated particle detector of the 21st century.

In addition, Worcester State continues its tradition of training teachers for public schools.

A minor in physics can be completed by a student in any major. The introductory year-long survey course on mechanics, electricity, magnetism and optics is typically taken by biology and chemistry majors. Other introductory courses include Astronomy, Physics of Waves, which focuses on acoustics, sound and hearing, and Physics in Art, which focuses on analytical techniques used by conservation scientists in art museums. Upper-level electives include Modern Physics, Optics, Introduction to Materials Science and Introduction to Nuclear Science. A lecture course in Big Bang Cosmology and a lab course in Observational Astronomy are being planned for the coming year. A minor in physics is very useful for students interested in careers in technical fields. Moreover, the breadth of concepts covered in the courses is adequate for students planning to take the Massachusetts high-school physics teacher certification test.

At present we do not offer a course in particle physics. In recent years, students have heard talks on dark matter and nuclear astrophysics. In 2010, they learned about preliminary results from the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at CERN. Through the virtual tour of the CERN labs, students in biology, chemistry, mathematics and computer science will be able to get a glimpse of the exciting world of particle physics and visit the site where the Higgs Boson was discovered.
