In addition, Worcester State continues its tradition of training teachers for public schools.

A minor in physics can be completed by a student in any major. The introductory year-long survey course on mechanics, electricity, magnetism and optics is typically taken by biology and chemistry majors. Other introductory courses include Astronomy, Physics of Waves, which focuses on acoustics, sound and hearing, and Physics in Art, which focuses on analytical techniques used by conservation scientists in art museums. Upper-level electives include Modern Physics, Optics, Introduction to Materials Science and Introduction to Nuclear Science. A lecture course in Big Bang Cosmology and a lab course in Observational Astronomy are being planned for the coming year. A minor in physics is very useful for students interested in careers in technical fields. Moreover, the breadth of concepts covered in the courses is adequate for students planning to take the Massachusetts high-school physics teacher certification test.

At present we do not offer a course in particle physics. In recent years, students have heard talks on dark matter and nuclear astrophysics. In 2010, they learned about preliminary results from the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at CERN. Through the virtual tour of the CERN labs, students in biology, chemistry, mathematics and computer science will be able to get a glimpse of the exciting world of particle physics and visit the site where the Higgs Boson was discovered.

At Internationella Engelska Skolan we strive to expose students to a broad perspective within the subjects we are teaching. In our year six and year nine groups we have been focused on atomic structure and the periodic table. Our year nines have taken a particular focus on the World’s Energy Challenges. These topics engaged our students and many of them began to question atomic theory to the point where it was relevant to open up their thinking to the idea of particles smaller than the tradition proton, neutron and electron that make up matter according to Bohr’s model of the atom.

Quebec students will gather to McGill's Physics Department as part of the traditional particle physics masterclass. The students will have lectures in the morning about the subatomic world, as well as ATLAS, the Large Hadron Collider and CERN. The students will visit a lab where an upgrade to the ATLAS hardware is being tested. They will then have the chance to discuss and ask questions to two post-docs working for McGill, but based at CERN, thanks to ATLAS virtual visits! Following that, the students will then try to rediscover an elementary particle by analyzing specially prepared data, which will be followed by them reporting their findings to other institutes.

Students from Carla Chavez’s Biology class at Taos High School in Taos New Mexico participate in the Projecting Particles STEMarts LAB.

This three day LAB is sponsored by the Harwood Museum and Los Alamos National Laboratory, and will be led by four teens from Taos Academy that have taken this workshop before. Conceived and facilitated by STEMArts founder and new media artist, Agnes Chavez, this unique LAB combines particle physics and projection art.

To kick off the workshop students participate in the Atlas Virtual Tour with Steve Goldfarb and receive an introduction to particle physics. They then create storyboards and learn to use the projection art app called Tagtool to develop visualizations of the physics concepts. To conclude they coordinate a live projection performance for a holiday event at the Harwood museum called, Lighting of Ledoux.
