<p>This year CERN decided to take a slightly different approach and took science to a place where people would not expect it to be – in a shopping centre. The POPscience project, a part of the European Researchers’ Night 2015 for the Geneva region, took place in Balexert shopping centre on the 25th of September. The programme was a unique blend of science, cinema, comics, poetry, music, games and encounters with artists and scientists.</p>

<p>In the live connections setup between the cinema and the ATLAS control room, the public was invited to discover differences with the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs-YMoVKne0">Hollywood view of ATLAS</a> , and discuss some of the <a href="http://angelsanddemons.web.cern.ch/">science behind the story</a> with physicists.</p>

We are familiar with the ATLAS experiment because a girl in our grade, Alissa Bee, is the daughter of Dr. Chris Bee. Dr. Bee came to our school and did a presentation on the ATLAS experiment. This was the first time that a collaborative virtual visit took place between CERN and two South Asian countries. The visit followed Masterclasses that were organized simultaneously in both India and Nepal. The students in each country had worked all morning measuring W bosons in real ATLAS data. During the virtual visit, they compared and discussed their results. In India, more than 70 A-level students from public and private schools in and around Jalandhar, Punjab participated in the Masterclass led by Ashok Kumar, Ashutosh Bhardwaj, Ravjeet Kour, and Suman Beri. In Nepal, Joerg Stelzer, Kate Shaw, and Suyog Shrestha led the Masterclass for undergraduate students from Kathmandu University and Tribhuvan University. The two-day Masterclass was a part of Physics Without Frontiers, an International Centre for Theoretical Physics project, in partnership with CERN. The programme’s goal is to inspire students, interest them in the nature of fundamental research, encourage them to consider a science-based academic career and introduce them to CERN and high-energy particle physics.</p>

The virtual visit with ATLAS is a part of a Masterclass hosted by Kathmandu University's Department of Natural Sciences. The visit, attended by nine undergraduate students in Applied Physics, will be follow-up to an introduction to CERN, LHC and the ATLAS experiment. On 22th May, the Department of physics together with the ICTP are organizing a Physics Masterclass in USTO-MB University. It is a scientific program initiated by the ICTP Physics without Frontiers project and co-funded by the Regione Friuli Venezia Guilia and run by Kate Shaw and Rachik Soualah, researchers from the Udine-ICTP Atlas Group and Amine Ahrich a researcher from Jijel University. It will be held in the Department of Physics, faculty of science of the University of Sciences and Technology of Oran USTO-MB. The goal of this program is to give physics students from both USTO-MB and University of Oran Es-Senia the opportunity to learn about a research organization like CERN, and especially to hear about the advances in the field of experimental high energy physics.</p>

It includes seven faculties, 30 departments and two institutes, it offers courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to around 30,000 students, graduating of them more than 4000 students each year.<br />
On 20th May, the Department of physics together with the ICTP are organizing a Physics Masterclass in M'sila University. It is a scientific program initiated by the ICTP Physics without Frontiers project and co funded by the Regione Friuli Venazia Giulia and is being ran by Kate Shaw and Rashik Soualah, researchers from the Udine-ICTP ATLAS Group and Amine Ahrich a researcher from Jijel University. It will be held in the Department of physics M'sila University by the conduct of local organizers, Mounir Bousahel, Essma Redouane-Salah, Sihem Kalli and Mourad Dababi, all of them are lecturer at physics Department.<br />
The goals of this program is to expose theoretical physics Master students to a research organization like CERN, which have a wide range of research expertise in experimental high energy physics.</p>

Canadians in Vancouver, British Columbia, will be gathering to enrich their understanding of scientific collaboration between Canada and Europe using CERN and its recent discovery of the Higgs boson as a framework for a symposium celebrating Europe Day. Canadians have been involved in nearly every aspect of the Large Hadron Collider accelerator and the ATLAS particle-physics detector. ATLAS-Canada spokesperson Rob McPherson will be addressing the symposium participants and talking about the multi-national effort that led to the Higgs breakthrough; his presentation will include a live virtual visit to the ATLAS control room at CERN. <!-- Replace default by booking form content --><p>The physics department at Birzeit University is organizing a Masterclass on particle physics on Tuesday 5th March as part of the International Masterclasses run by IPPOG, where many of high school students and undergraduate students are participating to learn more about particles, the LHC and the ATLAS experiment. The activities of the day include lectures, event analysis with real data from the LHC and virtual visit to CERN via video conference.<br />
The International Masterclasses are organised each year by the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG). They are held around the world at over 160 universities and research centers over a period of 3-4 weeks in February and March each year. They seek to engage young students with science and particle physics.</p>

The students of Mrs. Triessl's class have been studying together in an innovative Dual-Language (Spanish/English) program since kindergarten. In spite of the extra academic effort this program requires, the curriculum has maintained a strong and increasing focus on science education. The students have begun this year learning about matter and energy and look forward to meeting a real scientist addressing these topics in a laboratory far across the ocean! Colliding particles at very high energy to a speed close to the speed of light, demonstrates that all matter on earth is made up of electrons and quarks and gluons, the substructure of protons and neutrons. Short films will present two of the main experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, the European Center for Nuclear Research, ATLAS and CMS, where protons collide at energies up to 7 tev, simulating a situation very close to the big bang. Discussions about the potential discoveries of the Higgs boson will be performed. Posters displayed will show the detectors at the LHC and at the Tevatron Fermilab in Chicago. A live video link with the CERN will be provided at 12:00 PM.</p>

<!-- Replace default by booking form content --><p>The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) was formed on 1st January 2004 as a result of the merger between the University of Durban-Westville and the University of Natal. The new University brought together the rich histories of both former universities which encompass disadvantage and advantage respectively.</p>
<p>During the "Be a Scientist for a Week" program high school learners in their final two years of school will have the opportunity to spend a week at either the Westville, or Pietermaritzburg campus of the University of Kwazulu-Natal. The Westville campus will host approximately 30 students who were the top achievers in mathematics and science from the 20 feeder schools to the university. In order to foster their appreciation for science and assist the students to explore the wide variety of scientific endeavors available to them they will spend blocks of 3 hours hosted by research groups in physics, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics, geology, biological sciences, and computer science.</p>
<p>Within the physics department students will follow the masterclasses program where they will be given an introduction to particle physics, the LHC and the ATLAS Experiment, before having the chance to analyse real LHC data. Their session will end with the virtual visit to the ACR. The university has recently hired its first faculty member in particle physics..</p>

Students will also have the opportunity to analyze and compare data from the ATLAS experiment and summarize the fundamental facts around the Higgs boson discovery. The Middle School at Parkside is a public school located in Jackson, Michigan, United States of America. The Parkside core curriculum consists of instruction in Math, Science, Social Studies, Literacy, and English. Additionally, Parkside is a NASA Explorer School (since 2006). The NASA Explorer Schools Program provides opportunities for educators and students to become involved in the excitement of NASA research, discoveries, and missions, while incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and into education. This ATLAS Virtual Visit will further student involvement in STEM topics and careers.</p>
